1. Design is just a language, it’s not a message. If you say “retro” too much you will get hives and maybe die.

One of many bits of knowledge shared by Frank Chimero in his comprehensive “What advice would you give to a graphic design student?” post.

Here’s the link, for the facebook people: http://j.mp/design_advice

  2. Russia in color, a century ago, is a collection of “color” photographs from 1908-1912. How is it at all possible that this photo, above, is from 1910, you ask? 3 black & white shots, taken in quick succession with red, green and blue filters, then recombined. So great.

  3. How someone chooses music to listen to in a given moment says a lot, he said. Choosing from a list of songs is like picking a snack.

Sam Hey, from the short story he posted on his blog today.

    I couldn’t agree more.

  4. Reblogging this AGAIN, because Merlin modified his post to respond to my original reblogging. The interwebs are fun today.

The Swell Season covers  Neutral Milk Hotel | Music | A.V. Undercover | The A.V. Club

Sweet maui onion, that motherfucker can sing.1

What an ambitious and revered song to cover, but, holy shit, does he ever hit the 3-pointer.

Sure, I’d probably listen to Glen Hansard sing the ingredients on a shampoo bottle, but this is, you have to admit, pretty great.

Bonus: The Mighty Mangum playing 2-HB solo/live in 1998.

    1. Well. Eventually, he sings. First there’s a goddamned pre-roll beer commercial, then a spoodeley theme song, then an explanation of the “Undercover” project, then a kinda-cute interview, then I blacked out for a while, but I’m pretty sure I heard a song and saw a guy in a hat. It’s all kind of fuzzy now. My Lord, how the web breaks so hard when your chrome outshines your gold. Kind of like the delicious gold you’ll find inside every bottle of Budweiser®. 1. THANK YOU! (Thing is, I scoured my Dashboard and Reader subs and couldn’t turn it up. Apologies that you were overlooked, and thanks again.)
      2. Also? I’m not busy. I’m just disoriented. And that makes me look busy. Because my brow is furrowed, my eyes are crossed, and my cocksucking motherfucking book still isn’t done. Self-loathing is a hell of a drug.

  6. ‘Is she dying?’ one of the sisters asked me. I didn’t know how to answer the question. I wasn’t even sure what the word ‘dying’ meant anymore.

Atul Gawande, in his article “Hospice medical care for dying patients” in The New Yorker.

Yes, the article is classically long. But it’s one of the best things I’ve read in all my years on this planet of ours. I beg you to do the same.

Fun and easy to use, the DeviantArt Muro online drawing tool (created entirely in HTML5) is a sight to behold.

  9. Radiolab, WNYC’s venerable “human experience” podcast, is something to be seen and heard with rapt attention. This video, where they attempt to define the word “moment,” is beautiful. From the simple to the life-changing, the mundane to the gory (you’ve been warned), hit play on the video above and I dare you to try and look away for four minutes and 17 seconds.

  10. Your Beautiful Eyes, a way-cool collection of macro photos of eyeballs. Too bad there aren’t any blue ones in there.

  11. http://www.molleindustria.org/dead_skyscraper/game.html

Very interesting. A music video “un-game,” for a song by Jesse Stiles called “The Building.” Game created by Molleindustria

    From the FAQ:

The game and the song are based on Jesse’s brief tenure as a videographer in the partially destroyed buildings surrounding the World Trade Center site.
